I had a really tasty burger at The Ambassador...a bit pricey at $11 (NOT including fries-add another $6 if you want 'em) but definitely a good way to help stave off the impending drunkenness.
The burger is definitely list worthy, falling below my holy trinity (Slow Club, Zuni, Street) but on par with Chez Maman and Balboa Cafe.

I really like the Ambassador! My opinion may be biased because of the number of oh so hot Yelpers in attendance the night I went or the awesome cocktails that our bartender was slinging ($8 for a top shelf margarita? yes please!) or the fact that we had the balcony loungey area all to ourselves...where was I? Oh yeah, five stars!

Pizzetta 211
Category: Pizza
Neighborhood: Outer Richmond
Tommaso...Pizzeria Delfina...A 16...Nob Hill Cafe...Little Star...hell, you can even get a great breakfast pizza at Rose's or Ottimista. And now I have discovered a pizza that may be at the top of my list - Pizzetta 211.
The place is tiny and in the middle of nowhere (yes, I consider the Richmond the middle of nowhere...hell, dating someone in the sunset would be a long distance relationship for me) but they make some of the best pizza I've had in the city. Fresh ingredients and interesting toppings make for a great pie but what I love most is the crust - thin and slightly blistering and oh so good.
If you're in the mood for some fantastic pizza do yourself a favor and make a road trip out to the Richmond...you won't be sorry. Come hungry, bring cash (no credit cards accepted) and be prepared for a wait but trust me, it'll be worth it.

Tommaso Ristorante Italiano

Anyhow...my mom lives on the peninsula but grew up in the city...she loves everything Italian and everything old school San Francisco. So of course I had to take her to Tommaso. And she absolutely loved the place. It may have been the two bottles of wine (there were four of us...I'm not THAT big of a drunk!) or the flirty waiters but she left a happy woman. And when mama's happy, everybody's happy.
Thanks, Tommaso!

I'm a proud man but I'm not too proud to admit when I'm wrong. And Bar Johnny, I was so wrong about you. I returned tonight and had a tasty caesar salad with warm croutons. The plate was overflowing with romainey, cheesy goodness but I had to save some room for my entree - the Bar Johnny burger.
People who know me know that I'm a burger guy. Hell, I even have a burger list on Yelp that I'm quite proud of: http://www.yelp.c...
Bar Johnny's fantastic burger has earned a place on my list.
I only hope that I'm forgiven for my earlier indiscretions.
ps...it seems as though prices have come down as well - now there are a bunch of wines available under $10 a glass and entree prices seem to be a buck or two less expensive as well. Yay!

When I heard that Tablespoon was morphing into Bar Johnny I was a bit confused. Out of all the restaurants on Polk, Tablespoon was always one of my favorites. I decided to give Bar Johnny a shot on Wed night and definitely left underwhelmed.
First off, the remodel is just plain weird. One huge wall is made up of booths that require diners to sit side by side. Ok if you're having dinner with your significant other but if you're on a first date or with a buddy? Awkward!
Also, I liked the mural over the bar but wasn't a fan of the graffiti 'art' in the bathroom at all.
Prices were also out of whack - my glass of Pinot was only a couple of dollars cheaper than my tuna entree. With specialty cocktails in the $9-$12 range, your tab can skyrocket in a hurry. Overall, food was pretty tasty. Both the tuna loin and pork sliders received high marks. I also enjoyed the yogurt flatbread with dips except for the presentation - the dips were presented nicely on a plate but the flatbread were just rolled up in a napkin and set on our table instead of coming on a separate plate or in a basket.
I really want Bar Johnny to succeed and might pop in again for a bite to eat but really hope they lower their drink prices and if it's not too late, do something about the funky seating.

Pearl's Deluxe Burgers
Category: Burgers
Neighborhood: Nob Hill
There's a lot to like about Pearl's - the food is inexpensive, burgers are made with top quality beef and the staff was extremely friendly. I went with a bacon cheeseburger and a small side of fries. My burger was tasty but cooked a bit too much for my liking - only after I took my first bite did I notice that the menu board said all burgers cooked medium unless requested otherwise so I guess that was my bad. The burger did pack a lot of flavor as well as at least five pounds on my girlish figure.
Next time I'll request my burger medium rare and go with the infamous sweet potato fries. Hell, if my bulging belly is any indication I might even go with the mini burger instead of the regular. At least my walk home was uphill!
*for the record, my Top 5 burgers can be found at Slow Club, Street, Balboa Cafe, Zuni and Bar Johnny

Vicoletto
Category: Italian
Neighborhood: North Beach/Telegraph Hill
But really, the main reason I eat out is the food. The two pasta dishes I tried, my gnocchi and my friend's orecchiette, were both homemade and fantastic. The pork dish was deemed just ok. Prices seemed fair - fresh pastas in the $12-$15 range and main courses in the low $20's. Plus they have a nice selection of wines by the glass under $8.
Service was friendly but pretty aloof. We felt sorry for our waiter, he seemed to have the whole restaurant to himself while the manager was outside trying to drum up some business. I do need to mention that our busboy was on top of things and our water glasses never sat empty.
Overall, Vicoletto was a solid four star experience. Reasonable prices, tasty food and I'm sure our bumps in service will improve once they've had some time to settle in.

I know, I know...gelato isn't the best thing in the world for a man watching his waifish figure but when I'm in the mood for a treat (aka wandering drunk around North Beach) I'll take some creamy gelato goodness and make it a double.

Was there a wait to get drinks? Yes.
Did people attack the food like vultures as soon as it hit the table? Sure.
Did I still have a good time? Of course.

Velvet Cantina
Categories: Bars, Latin American, Mexican

I've always tossed Velvet Cantina in the same company as Tommy's and Puerto Allegre as in horribly overrated. Boy was I wrong. EVERYTHING we tried was fantastic and super inexpensive for the quality. Service was fast and friendly (our waiter even spiffed us some free guacamole - thanks!) and the margaritas were delicious.
Not only is Velvet Cantina my new 'go to' Mexican spot, it's right up there with one of the best meals I've had so far this year. While all you suckers are waiting an hour plus at Tommy's (did I mention VC takes reservations?) I'll be sipping a tasty margarita on the rocks in a corner both with queso on my face.
ps...dude with the shiny pants and cowboy hat slamming Corona's on Saturday night was creepy yet hilarious in a way that can only be appreciated in the Mission. Thanks, Velvet Cantina!

My iced chai paired well with the patio and the sunny afternoon. Throw in a couple of puppies out front, a friendly staff and cute hipster girls milling about and Coffee Bar is a fantastic place to waste away a Sunday with friends.

Coffee Bar is my kind of place. I love the wide open space, the art, the music...but that would be all for naught if they served horrible coffee and food. After one visit, I say thumbs up on the coffee, and 'eh' for the food.
I had a grilled mozzarella/sun dried tomato sandwich and while the taste was great, the texture was a bit off. I love a warm sandwich but not a lukewarm one, especially when the bread is too crunchy. The side salad was simple with a nice dressing and overall, it was a nice size lunch for $8.
I will definitely be back to try more menu items and to just enjoy the wonderful space. Coffee Bar is a great addition to the SF coffee scene and is bound to be the next Blue Bottle or Ritual.

Thursday night, 10pm...there's no line to get in and I hand my ID to the bouncer. He waves me in then stops my (brown) friend and says he can't let him in because he has a backpack. We're not talking a "Trekking through Europe" size bag, more like a small backpack that'll hold work clothes because *surprise* my friend wanted to change out of his business attire before heading out to drinks.
As we're talking to the bouncers about this we see two (white) guys leave the bar with a bag bigger than my friend's.
Me -"What about those guys?"
Bouncer #1 "They're friends with the owner"
Bouncer #2 "Yeah, it's all about who you know (snickers)"
I walk in to tell our other friends (who just walked into the bar three minutes before us) that they won't let one of us in because of the bag and one of my (white) friends in the bar points to his big ass bag and says "They let me in" So my friends pound their just ordered drinks and we took our business across the street to Rye.
I'm not claiming racism but maybe things would have been different if the four of us didn't look like a walking Benetton ad. All I can say is I won't be returning to the Ambassador and I definitely will warn all of my friends about their "policy"
