Neighborhood: MissionGreat space to chill with friends for awesome Mexican food and drinks. Be sure to put your name on the list otherwise you will be waiting forever for a table. The Staff is extremely friendly and the space with dark warm Spanish feels. Try to get a booth if you decide to eat there.
Bathrooms are on in the back and you have to look extremely high (above the door to tell which is the right one to enter) but to save you some time guys on the left and girls on the right.
Save some cash by ordering a margarita pitcher made by Pete. Some history why a bar is called a bar because of the bar you put your foot on at the bar, thanks Pete. Totally a locals place.

high-end mex food? This could be worth it. Tasty avocado chicken fajitas and legit no-premix margarita. The guys that work there are pretty awesome too.

I don't know. I almost can't decide what I think of this place. On one hand, I dig the atmosphere and the margaritas, but on the other hand, I feel ignored by the staff.
I've been here twice. The first time was ok, but it took forever for our meals and drinks to come. When our drinks did finally make it to us, they didn't make it to the table, but rather on my lap. Honestly, not a big deal in my book, it's not easy to carry a tray of full drinks and the waitress was new. They totally replenished the drinks and we carried on with our night. Food was good... not great, but good.
Second visit here was a week ago with four other friends. It took them quite a bit of time to seat us, despite all the empty seats. The waiter was a bit out of it, but nice. He kept forgetting to take our order and actually told us he was a bit behind and out of it. Strange from a waiter, but whatever.
Then it took another 20 minutes for our pitcher of margaritas to get there, not because they hadn't made it, but because nobody would bring it to us. My friend had to eventually go grab it and give the staff some shit just to get any kind of service.
Fortunately, they totally responded and paid plenty of attention to us the rest of the night.
The food was better than I remembered it from before.
My iffiness is mostly about the service. I actually like the place and the food is decent enough to eat there regularly, but I just feel like they need a little more practice on the customer service end of things.
I'll definitely go back and hopefully my update will have a better star rating.
I went with a group here on a Thursday night--the decor is more bar-like atmoshpere, dark, casual, but perfect for that. The margaritas were excellent. The menu is somewhat limited but what I had was tasty and gluten-free (achiote steak tacos with corn tortillas). My server knew what gluten was and steered me away from their corn chips since they are fried in common oil but was happy to make sure my tacos were made on a clean part of the grill.
This was a fun place to go when you want to have some food and drinks and just hang out with friends. I will definitely be going back.

FYI - Arrive here before it opens and you'll think the place has been closed for years! With the giant chain and padlock on the doors and not a person in sight waiting for the place to open. Luckily, I knew better and had my friends meet there at 5:30 pm (when it opens).
The space is full of warm, dark wood and has more of a bar vibe then a restaurant vibe...which only made me like it even more! The margaritas are fantastic - the house version was the best. The food is good with slight twists on the stables. The enchilada didn't come out drenched in sauce, but the cilantro sauce was a great sub. The free chips and salsa was the least tasty, but you really couldn't complain about free food. The atmosphere is great and pretty full crowd that Sunday night. The service was also very attentive and friendly. I like it and would totally come back!

The two best things about this place are: (1) authentic margaritas, and (2) fresh, creative food.
Any bar that makes real margaritas (lime juice, tequila, and triple sec) ranks pretty high with me. A margarita made with a sugary mix is not a margarita. They have a new premium tequila each month, and it's usually well worth the extra 50 cents.
You can watch the people in the kitchen making the salsa fresh while you eat. I've tried just about everything on the menu and it has always been very good.
The bartenders and servers are all really laid back and friendly but also very professional and prompt.
Only draw back is that they've become so popular that it's often very hard to get a table. But hey, all that means is that you need to drink more of their great margaritas, right?

Yuck! VC fails the chips and salsa test, fails the beans test. Tacos weren't bad but were somewhat soggy from all the guacamole. On the whole, a sorry interpretation of Mexican cuisine. Rarely have I been so turned off by refried beans, which were seasoned with what tasted like american chili powder and whipped to a thick, poopy consistency. The chips tasted like yesterday's doughnuts, very poor. Salsa was gringo-style (which can sometimes be good, not bashing it for that) and insipidly bland. Perhaps a jalapeño was waved in its general direction at some point but I doubt even that. I don't know what the deal in the kitchen is, but they're not trying. Throw a rock outside the door (as I like to cliche) and you will hit someone's Mexican grandma who can show you how to make decent beans.
The bar does pour a stiff cocktail, hence the 2nd star.

Warning - if you want authentic Mexican food, this is not the place to go. If you want a quiet dinner spot on Friday or Saturday night, this is not the place to go.
Now, if you want to drink a few margaritas and have some killer cactus avocado enchiladas or some fresh guacamole or some corn bread sopes before heading to some club in the Mission, this is the place to go! Nice staff, very decent Tequila selection.
Conveniently located on 23rd street between Mission and Valencia, walking distance to bars and clubs or just a cab ride to 16th and Valencia for more bars and clubs.

I really like Velvet Cantina. Good food, good vibe, the service is fast and friendly. Great vegetarian options.
Four of us out for a nice dinner in the Mission and what did we pick? Well, unfortunately a bar, nothing less and definitely nothing more. Go only to have a Margarita.
Appetizers, ah yes, (or would that be Aaaarggghhh!!)...Chips and salsa - canned stewed tomatoes. Guacamole - flavorless mush. Chili con queso - less flavor than Velveeta and stewed tomatoes diluted to avoid any hint of flavor and/or staying on the greasy chips, then slightly heated. I have never had to go into a Mexican restaurant and ask for bottled sauce to add flavor to salsa, guacamole and chile con queso, but here it is absolutely necessary. But then again, the appetizers were the highlight of the meal.
Slow, sloppy, inattentive service. Entre orders wrong. Four entrées, but delivered over a 5-10 minute span while the waiter did what? Who knows? Perhaps out of sympathy for other diners, pushed more Margaritas.
One of our party thought that their burrito was great. It was big.
Shrimp Diablo was a few shrimp swamped in thick stew of tomatoes, onion and peppers. The requested tortillas were slung, by someone flashing by the table, 20 minutes after the last entre arrived.
The Chicken in Mole, tepidly warm lower legs drowned in a sauce of Hersey's syrup, Schilling's chili powder and enough sugar to make a week's supply of cotton candy at a good sized carnival. Hardly touched, (and that's a good thing!).Asked for beans no rice. Waiter kindly offered to replace the rice with a salad - great. What did we get? Lots of rice, no beans, and under the few chopped lettuce leaves, what, more rice!
Naked Chile Relleno, well hardly exposed to peering eyes, perhaps there was a chile under the nopales/papas but hard to tell. Could have looked, but why bother?
Nuevo Mexican food, hardly. No Way Yo food is a far more accurate description. Avoid.
If you are going here for chips and salsa (free with drinks!), a pitcher of margaritas, a side of black beans and guacamole while sitting at the bar, this place rules. But as you probably noticed, we're giving this place only three stars, not the the 5 stars appropriate for a place that rules. Here's why: bad music, the nouveau mexican is not that good and it's a bit on the expensive side. Now, nouveau mexican doesn't mean bad, but if that's what you are going for, you better be kick ass at it or else you get the obvious "this isn't authentic!" criticism from the white people you are trying to cater to. Oh and fat bitches like to order plates of nachos as a side and eat the entire thing like they was starving in Somalia (also known as SOMA for us in the know, you know, us really sympathetic it girls who adopt starving babies). This is probably the perfect spot for you Marina folks to come get "scummy" in the Mish. In that case I recommend the sushi a la carne asada al pomodoro fresco authentico.
j/k marina folks. stay home, there's no beer pong here.
Right, so salsa, chips, beans, guacamole + margaritas = muy bueno! ha ha
oh la rondalla, why won't you open again?!
Everything in this place falls into two categories - Excellent and Good
What is Excellent: margaritas, chips, guacamole, velvet nachos, chicken mole, bordello burrito, naked relleno, atmosphere (fun décor and people watching), music and service (wait and bar staff).
What is Good: salsa. It has its tasty some days and its bland some days. But the chips are so good that on the bland salsa days they are tasty enough to just eat naked. Or to save and eat with your meal.
If you are looking for a super authentic Mexican food experience this might not be it. If you want a quiet dining experience this might not be the place either.
I'm no molé expert, but the Velvet Cantina molé? Holé molé! It was savory and spicy and magically textured with smoky chocolate. Dark, smoky chocolate. Mmmm sex on a plate. And I never use that phrase - "sex on a" anything.
And my dish complimented the dark and sexy interior perfectly. Come to think of it, maybe I wouldn't have found everything so sexy had I not been drunkity drunk drunk on their yummy margs.
Either way ... four sexy stars!

food and ratings are all relative to what people like and who they are. that being said I have been here a handful of times and I keep coming back; always good margaritas, great chile con queso, smokin' mole chicken and did I mention the margaritas - we usually get hammered on 3, stuffed on the food and waddle home. The food is always fresh and creative, service is sometimes good and sometimes slow - depends on what waiter you get. and yes the bar portion is filled with hipsters, but what place in SF isn't these days - that's another story.
Great neighborhood bar! The staff is fun and welcoming, the vibe is chill, and the food and drinks are yummy! Can't go wrong with a pitcher of margaritas and the velvet chicken nachos...it's supposed to be an appetizer, but it easily feeds three people.

This place is pretty cool. Haven't eaten here, just drinks at the bar. Prefer midweek visits, as it gets a little crowded and hip otherwise. Bartender remembered my name when I walked in my second visit. Interesting drinks, a serrano infused vodka with cucumber juice was really good. So was the cilantro tequila drink, though I'm not a huge tequila fan. Decent margaritas, judging from the sips I stole from the girls. Good free chips and salsa. The place is fairly small but reminds me of a cheesy nightclub, so I don't go too often, but I live right around the corner and it's a nice change sometimes. Want to try the sangria but they're always out.
Agree with Jason H. entirely, this place is good, not great.
However, it plugs a serious hole in the Mission dining scene: the sit-down, semi-relaxed Mexican place. The food won't be as good as as La Tacqueria or El Faralito, but it will be more leisurely, and you can have drinks. Consider this an upscale Chevy's, so to speak.
I can speak to the margaritas--they are very good, and the nachos as a must-eat: that queso with its velveeta texture is throw-back to, well, velveeta.
However, you might want to practice reading lips before you dine here: you won't be able to hear each other amidst all the clamor.

Velvet Cantina takes the sort of walk-in Mission taqueria and turns it into a comfortable, if a bit loud / busy, sit-down restaurant. The food retains an authentic feel, though the restaurant, bar, waitstaff, and soundtrack are hipster central. The nachos are excellent. The mole's perhaps a bit too rich. I'm not a tequila fan, so I have no comment. It's an enjoyable place to dine with friends, but I wouldn't expect to be blown away.

Pitchers of Margarita..
Can't get that in Seatown, now can we??
Velvet Cantina boasts tasty authentic Mexican food, solid service, and some excellent libations that come in bulk!
For starters, we tried the Chile Con Queso. It was just okay. The guac was good, the salsa tasty, and the chips- never ending.
I had the Marinated tri tip, which was excellent. Perfectly cooked, Medium rare, and it came with grilled vegetables and Spanish rice.
I had bites of the:
Velvet Lasagna- WOW! Very tasty and aptly named. Apparently, this is a favorite..
Chile Verde- the pork was tender and the Verde sauce, spicy.
Chicken Avocado Enchiladas- avocados, chicken, and cheese.. this one was so good!
The margaritas were exactly how I like them- No mixer, just lime juice.. Oh, and they come in PITCHERS!?! Authentic 'mixerless' 'ritas are proving hard to find these days. These bad boys were strong and tasty. They also have a few other flavors if you're feeling adventurous- Banana and Mango.
The ambiance was that of a 'not so mainstream' Mexican restaurant. Nice, but not over the top. Great, speedy service and very acommodating with out big group of folks!
Oh.. and did I mention..
Pitchers of Margarita?

Wow - I can only blame myself for trying this place for the 6th time and it still sux miserably.
Waiter did not even approach the table for at least 5 minutes - to put that into perspective, me and my friend had eaten an entire basket of their disgusting grease-soaked chips, accompanied by warm water without ice, before someone even stopped by to get our drink order. Simply amazing!
About the drinks - if you order a margarita, you probably should spring for the $10 version with regular tequila. I don't know what is in the $7 version but it tastes like it could take the paint off of a car.
We ordered some nachos. Sparse toppings and not even in the same league as anything you could get at just about any taqueria in the Mission. Dry. Tasteless. Awful. Especially so when you consider they are ~$10 (taqueria nachos are $6-7). We downed our drinks and got out of there as fast as possible. I still gave the waiter 15% - I couldn't blame all of the shortcomings on him and, having been in the service industry, it is really difficult for me to stiff someone.
Crappy service, crappy food, crappy drinks. Every time I go there I get the impression that the restaurant is being run by a bunch of young stoners. I've given Velvet Cantina more than enough chances. Won't be back for the seventh time. Consider yourself warned.

First off let me start off by saying the only reason this place got 4 starts instead of 5 is because they didn't have sangrita which is a MUST as it is the perfect chaser for tequila.
That being said this place is great. The waiter knew sangrita and agreed it is a necessary element but sadly didn't have it. Darius aka our waiter was amazing even bringing out chicken and cheese samples in order for us to gage the heat factor on the Spice Scale.
The food was delicious, omg the nachos, lasagna, enchiladas, and the pitchers of margaritas hit the spot, with just enough salt. There were several other large parties and everyone was receiving the same great service.

Just moved into the Mission(22nd\Capp). So this is my new hood. I decided to get in some trouble last weekend, which included getting started with some sit down Mexican food and margaritas!
I called my buddy up, picked him up...'cause he broke his neck and can't ride his bike. I figured I save him some cab fare. After fetching him, parked down the street from my crib, dropped some stuff of and we walked over.
Even though it was like 9pm on a saturday, we were able to walk in and grab a table! That alone is worth a star! One of the things I like about the Velvet Cantina is that it's not only a restaurant, but it also has a bar with seating and so it's also a scene.
So I order avocado and nopales(cactus) enchiladas and a margarita. They had margarita specials, can't remember the name of the tequila, but it was like 6 bucks and the waiter said it was pretty decent...which it was, but it wasn't Don Julio, so the second margarita was don julio with salt on the rocks....mmm!
I love nopales and avocado, but never thought of mixing them, let alone in an enchilada. I will definitely be experimenting with these ingredients at home! The chips were fresh and the salsa was kicking. Cause I was trying to be healthy I order black beans. The meal was real tasty.
I will be back! Especially since I can easily stumble there and back ;-)
Best_Birthday_ Evar! I might still be drunk if I'm talking like a pirate.
Velvet Cantina turned out to be the perfect place to celebrate my 30th. Our group of 20 hit the bar for pitchers of classic, pineapple and watermelon margaritas. And let me tell you... those fruity ones are dangerous. I'm a classic margarita girl all the way -- on the rocks with salt, please -- but once I decided to throw caution to the wind and partake of the fruity goodness, there was no turning back and a hangover was inevitable.
Once we were seated and the menus were passed around, everyone was blown away by the options and the fair prices. The sweet and spicy chicken mole, the cactus enchiladas and the trip tip were huge hits. I'm pretty sure ordering the tri tip was my saving grace and the reason I didn't end up in the gutter. For a group of 20, the bill came to $25 each! Not bad, but I don't think that included the pitchers.
The night was so good I think I'm even going to forgo throwing a big birthday bash. What could be better than getting loosy goosy with my besties? Nada.

Their oh-so-refreshing watermelon and pineapple margaritas are awesome! Thanks to Darius and Jason, who were behind the bar, our group was never without a pitcher. I think I probably ended up drinking an entire pitcher myself. Did I get wasted? No way! I may be petite, but I can hold my liquor.
We were there celebrating Nicole's big 3-0, and we had a blast! The vibe is casual and lively, so our rowdy crowd fit in perfectly. The food was really delicious and cheap to boot (nothing over $16)! I had carne asada tacos and a couple bites of chile verde and both were tasty. Our bill came out to $25/person -- not bad! My sweetie took care of the pitchers, which were about $30 a pop though!
After a filling meal and 1.5 slices of the German chocolate cake we brought in from Just Desserts, I went home and passed out around 10pm. Ok... so maybe I was a little buzzed!

The food, the crowd, the drinks, oh my! Velvet Cantina knows how to host a group and do it well. Not only were we full of watermelon and house margarita pitchers but the chips and salsa were a great start to the meal. I was able to sample a couple entrees and each were good.
Its always greta to find a place that mid-week can seat a large group of twenty or so and handle the noise. The dishes came out in a timely matter and the whole group fit in with the loud buzzing of the restaurant. This was a great place to house Nicole G.'s big 30!

Potato Burrito = ???
The veggie burrito is made up of chickpeas, rice and a potatoe/guacamole filling. Sure, potatoes are a root vegetable, but I was really hoping for less starchy vegetables like grilled peppers, grilled onions, pico de gallo.... oh well!
If you like potatoes in your burrito, you might like the burritos here.

I love this place.
Margaritas by the pitcher. Delicious.
Homemade chips. Delicious.
Chicken avocado enchiladas. Delicious.
Guacamole, ceviche, cocktails, sopas, you guessed it. DELICIOUS.
I've gone here many times, small groups, big groups, boisterous drinking groups that have just finished a play over at The Dark Room and want to relax, those same groups twenty minutes before the kitchen closes on a Saturday night, and it's always the same. Awesome with great service. We like sitting in the dining room without the bar, the one closer to Valencia rather than Mission.
Just reviewing the place is giving me a craving.

This place is great. Actually... it's better than great.
I've been three times, twice in big groups - which is great because I've been able to have a taste of about 75% of the menu.
My two favs: Chicken Avocado Enchiladas and the Chile Verde.
I was drunker than a skunk the last time I had a meal at the Cantina, so I didn't think I was capable of giving it a fair review until today. I went back completely sober on a hot hot day looking forward to some cool margaritas for a little birthday dinner. First of all, I have to say I like how dark it is inside, sort of sets the tone. What that tone is, I'm not sure, but I like it. Cue up pitchers of booze, which is never a bad thing in my book. The margs were interesting mixes of watermelon and pineapple flavors, a little sweet for my particular boozerific palette, but still delicious. And I have to say, the food was pretty darn tasty, even without beer googles on (or beer tastebuds, or drunk munchies or whatever phrase the kids are using). I could only eat half of my bordello burrito, though, it was the size of a house cat. All in all a worthwhile experience that I'll have to repeat.
Oh, and the best part was our huge group was ordering pitchers with about as much reckless abandon as a group can have on a school night, but that said, my bill was about $15 less than I had expected for all the food and drink I shoveled in. Gotta love tasty, cheap Mexican, baby.

Margaritas made from scratch, a tequila selection that rivals Tommy's (no joke), bomb food that's a great twist on regular Mexican restaurant fare . . . that's a lot of win, right there.
Doesn't hurt that the staff is incredibly rad and really friendly, too. Ask them what tequila they've got as their special for the night! It's ALWAYS something super tasty.

Preface to this review, I probably could've given four stars but I ordered something not so great and didn't taste the margs...stay tuned for my next review when I go back and get something better!
I came here with a friend recently because Beretta had a really long wait. No big deal, I was excited to try Velvet Cantina anyway.
We were seated right away with no res on a crowded Tuesday night.
We ordered the cornbread sopas to start. They were great. Lots of flavor, little bit of kick. I unfortunately don't like cilantro (weird I know) and there was a lot on there. But I could definitely order it without it next time.
My friend got Chicken Avocado Enchiladas and loved them. I ordered the Velvet Nachos from the appetizer menu as my dinner. Sorta silly now that I think about it. Normally nachos are my fave but these were a bit different. They had chile con cheso rather than the pounds of melty cheese you might be used to. I was not expecting this because honestly I was paying more attention to catching up with my friend than the menu. I guess I learned my lesson.
BUT THEN, we got the s'mores nachos for dessert. AMAZING! Cinnamon chips drenched in chocolate and then marshmellows flameb-ed or however you'd spell that word. GREAT!!
Can't wait to come back!

I've had drinks here before but went for dinner last night for the 1st time. I thought it was pretty darn good. We ordered a pitcher of good top shelf margaritas (tasty) and the Chicken Tortilla Soup was a great appetizer (in fact the bowl was huge and is almost a meal all by itself). The steak tacos were great too.... I was impressed with the tastiness of the beans and rice (sometimes nothing but plate garnish in some joints).... Prices weren't too bad and our server was a super pleasant fellow. I'd definitely go back and try some of the other menu options.
pro: fantastic margaritas.
con: expensive margaritas
other con: gross over peppered ships, ceviche dish that just did not function as it should have in every way possible.
Amazing food, tequilla and staff! I heart The Velvet Cantina! Nice vibe, easy bar, would recomend to anyone who wants a mellow night out with cocktails.
The atmosphere was great, the bartender was awesome, the server was great and everyone was friendly. The chips on the table were very very good.
I couldn't taste the cactus in the cactus enchiladas, but I guess I didn't really try. The margaritas were fantastic. I liked the plain one. The cilantro gimlet was not good. Actually, it was very bad. Acquired taste, said the bartender.
The chips and entrees were enough. We were all so full--there's no way I could have dessert or apps. I definitely want to go back and get apps and margaritas. Yum.
